Cannes, Venice programmers among the experts for the second Cutting Edge Talent Camp (exclusive) | News

Programmers from the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and the Venice International Film Festival are among the experts taking part in the second edition of Cutting Edge Talent Camp, Germany’s development lab for first and second feature film directors, to be held November 5-14.

The hybrid event is organized by the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival (IFFMH, November 11-21).

Ten projects will take part in the event, consisting of three projects in progress; four directors’ projects; and three from producers.

The online section will take place November 5-10, with on-site events in Mannheim November 11-14.

Among the 12 experts who advise on project pitches are Anne Delseth, programmer at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs; Sara Juricic, coordinator of the Hubert Bals Fund in Rotterdam; and Daniela Persico, programmer of the Locarno International Film Festival and the IFFMH.

Iranian director Mani Haghighi will give a masterclass at the event; while there will be four workshops, including that of the Venetian programmer Paolo Bertolin.

The Cutting Edge Talent Camp is open to students and graduates of a German film or art school who are developing their first or second feature film.

Among the projects selected for the second edition are the tragicomedy Subtext (working title), a work in progress from director Sophie Linnenbaum and producers Britta Strampe and Laura Klippel. Filmed in Germany in the spring of 2021, the €880,000 project is in post-production. It’s about a young woman living in a world where people are divided into main and supporting characters. She is about to take her final exam to decide which one she will be; but then she stumbles upon inconsistencies regarding the tragic death of her father, a brilliant main character.

“The objectives of the IFFMH and the Talent Camp are deeply linked: to build bridges between generations, to accompany new arrivals at the very beginning of their career, to involve them and to hope that they will come back very quickly once the project has develop finished – or with their next! said a statement from Sascha Keilholz and Frédéric Jaeger, respectively director and program manager at the IFFMH.

“When we first created our initiative, our interactions with films were still much more physical,” said Zsuzsi Bankuti, Head of Cutting Edge Talent Camp. “Since then, it has become increasingly important to understand audience shifts and new potentials.”

The Talent Camp is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM) and the Media and Film Society Baden – Württemberg (MFG).
